Students from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School in Killarney received a special invite to the TikTok headquarters in Dublin this Thursday to celebrate Lá na Teicneolaíochta as part of this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations. They were one of 15 schools from throughout the country in attendance.
St Brigid’s established a Coiste gaeilge (Irish committee) last year and were awarded their first Gaelbhratach from Gael Linn for their promotion of Irish language in school and across social media platforms like Instagram (@gaeilgeoiri_airne) and TikTok (@gaeilge_sbk). They were one of just three secondary schools in the county to receive this award.
The exciting outing to TikTok coincides with the good news that they are being awarded their second flag this May with the awards ceremony taking place in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick.
Four members of An Coiste Gaeilge, Jennifer Rea, Sophia Sharma, Liadh Forde and Kate O’Sullivan, attended the event in Dublin with their teacher Sinéad Collins.
In addition to informative workshops, there was a fantastic panel of guest speakers including TG4 broadcaster Niamh Ní Chróinín, presenter Máire Ní Churraoin, The Kerry Cowboy Séaghan Ó Súilleabháin and language activist Eoin P Ó Murchú.
“I am immensely proud of the work that has been done by the Coiste Gaeilge over the last two years and it’s wonderful to be awarded the Gaelbhratach in recognition of this,” said teacher Sinéad Collins
“There has always been a strong presence and high standard of Irish in St Brigid’s and we are delighted to further this,” she added.
