
Killarney has won a gold medal in this year’s national tidy towns competition.
It followed up last year’s tidiest large town success with another impressive performance but the ultimate prize again proved elusive on this occasion.
Killarney improved its overall mark by an impressive nine points since last year and that was sufficient to win the county award for Kerry.
Kenmare, Listowel and Tralee also received gold medals, Sneem won silver and Portmagee was awarded bronze.
Kenmare was the runner-up to Blackrock in Co Louth in the best small town category while Tralee was second to Ballincollig, Co Cork in the best large urban centre section.
Ballincollig was also declared the winner of the coveted overall award, Westport, Co Mayo is Ireland’s best large town, pipping Dalkey in Co Dublin to the prize, and Ballinahown, Co Westmeath is Ireland’s tidiest village.
Sneem was the national winner in the pollinator plan category, Castlegregory won the best playground sculpture prize in the bat conservation category and was the runner-up in the climate action section,.
Holy Family National School in Tralee was also a regional award winner in the schools category.
The winners were revealed at a reception in Croke Park this Friday at lunchtime.
