WITH Covid-19 forcing the postponement of the Darkness into Light fundraising walk for Pieta House until the autumn, Killarney is reacting in a hugely positive manner by organising a virtual walk to support the charity.
The Killarney No Name Club is spearheading a campaign to encourage locals to walk just 10 steps, indoors or outdoors, and record themselves doing so and for every video the club is tagged on, it will donate €2 to the cause.
The club is promoting the initiative in support of the annual Nathan’s Walk fundraiser in Killarney which commemorates the life of local teenager Nathan O’Carroll who passed away 13 years ago.
Nathan was just 14 years of age when he died by suicide on December 16, 2007 but his memory has been kept alive as people from all over Kerry, North Cork and beyond descend on Killarney every year to support the fundraiser.
Nathan’s Walk – part of the nationwide Darkness into Light project – has already helped raise hundreds of thousands of euro to help fund the work being undertaken by Pieta House.
The annual Nathan’s Walk is 5K – or 6,250 steps – and if every participant walks 10 steps for Nathan, the club can reach the 5K target by May 9.
“The objective is to take a video of yourself walking 10 steps and tag the Killarney No Name Club. It can be up the stairs, in the house, outside in nature or whatever creative way you can do the steps while still maintaining the important social distancing,” the club said on Facebook.
For every video of 10 steps that the Killarney No Name Club is tagged on, it will donate €2 euro to Nathan’s Walk up to the goal of 5K.
Club members have asked participants to nominate friends to join in and to use #10stepsfornathan and #killarneynonameclub as the hashtags.
