KILLARNEY is making a determined bid to maintain its purple reign.

The town was awarded a prestigious Purple Flag last year after being judged one of the best managed locations between the hours of 5pm and 5am in terms of safety, facilities, entertainment options, atmosphere and general cleanliness.

The Killarney Purple Flag Working Group has just finalised its renewal application to the Association of Town and City Management and an official overnight assessment will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 5/6.

Over 65 town and city and town centres have been awarded Purple Flags in the UK and Ireland since the scheme was launched in October 2009 and the total number in the Republic of Ireland is 14.

Independent assessors will visit Killarney to review the progress the town has made since its initial accreditation in 2014. The official assessment in August will take place from 4.00pm to 4.00am.

The local steering committee, chaired by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Deputy President Paul O’Neill, is seeking the support of all businesses in Killarney for the evening and night of the assessment and businesses are being asked to decorate windows in purple, light up hotels and public buildings in purple and be vigorous on litter and glass, especially from 10pm onwards.

Security staff are asked to pay particular attention and wear high-viz attire as encouraged by Killarney Purple Flag Working Group.

The public is asked to welcome visitors and assessors, to be available to speak to assessors and to inform all frontline staff of the purple flag and assessment.
