A SCENIC roadway in Killarney, bordering the national park, is to be transformed into a carpet of beautiful bluebells by community volunteers on Saturday next.

The Killarney Looking Good Committee is organising a community bulb planting day on Mission Road, which runs from St Mary’s Cathedral to the jarvey stand, and everybody is invited to lend a hand.

The project follows last year’s very successful bluebell and snowdrop planting on the same roadside and the colour and spectacular sight it offers when the bulbs bloom is adds a whole new dimension to the town’s visual image.

The committee points out that the planting will improve biodiversity while also bringing people together to get some gentle exercise and fresh air.

“We have an amazing national park on our doorstep and this is a great opportunity for people to come together and enhance the link between the town and the park,” said chairperson Yvonne Quill.

“Volunteers don’t need to be an expert gardener as no experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided,” she added.

The first session will be from 9am to 11am and the second session from 11am to 1pm on Saturday.

“People don’t have to come to the whole session and any help they can give will be gratefully received. Remember, even an hour’s planting will leave a lasting legacy for the whole community to enjoy,” Yvonne added.

The event is supported by South Kerry Development Partnership, Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

While it is not necessary to book it would be great if people could confirm attendance to 064-37928 or killarneylookinggood@gmail.com.

A fine and subtle spirit dwells
In every little flower
Each one its own sweet feeling breathes
With more or less of power.
There is a silent eloquence
In every wild bluebell
That fills my softened heart with bliss
That words could never:
