KILLARNEY has become the new centre of political power in Kerry with two of the five new mayors elected at today’s annual general meeting of Kerry County Council representing the local municipal area.
Following the earlier election of Cllr Niall Kelleher as Mayor of Killarney, in succession to Cllr Brendan Cronin, Fine Gael’s Cllr John Sheahan was elected Mayor of Kerry, to succeed Cllr Michael D O’Shea.
Cllr Sheahan, a popular local representative who has been a member of the council since he was first co-opted to succeed his former TD brother, Tom, in 2007, said he was honoured to take up the role.
“To become Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council is indeed a great privilege. It is one which I humbled to take on,” he remarked.
“I am very conscious that this is a role which relatively few people have occupied since Kerry County Council was established in 1899 so it is a position which I come to with great humility and respect for the role,” he said.

Mayor Sheahan, who lives in Coolgarrive, on the outskirts of Killarney town, told his colleagues: “I hope I will serve as a fair and effective Cathaoirleach for the 12 months ahead and I am sure that, with your support, we can achieve a lot in the coming period”.
The new deputy mayor is Fine Gael Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen from Kenmare.
Meanwhile, Cllr Norma Foley (FF) is the new Mayor of Tralee, with Cllr Graham Spring her deputy; Cllr Seamus Cosai Fitzgerald (FG) takes the chain of office for the South and West Jerry Municipal Area, with Cllr Norma Moriarty (FF) the deputy while Cllr John Lucid (FF) is the Mayor of Listowel with Cllr Jimmy Moloney (FF) his deputy.
Cllr John Joe Culloty (FF0 will be Mayor Niall Kelleher’s deputy in Killarney.
