AN innovative Killarney GAA club has uploaded a fun-filled video on YouTube to promote its bid to create a new world record for the number of people running in wellingtons at the one time.

The have-a-go Glenflesk club will attempt to book its place in the Guinness Book of Records on Sunday, May 11 with the bumper 1km wellie run, starting at the INEC in Killarney at noon.

To create a greater awareness of the event and in a clever attempt to boost numbers on the day, the club enlisted a cast of dozens to don their wellies and play star roles in the fast-paced, all-action YouTube slot.

The stars of the show include a dapper wedding party in the Malton Hotel, dancing in and drinking from the finest agricultural wellingtons and even their wedding band, the O’Connor Brothers, are churning out the tunes in the finest of green rubber footwear.

Workmen throughout the parish of Glenflesk take time out to give an impromptu dance routine in wellies, children show their dance skills in the schoolyard, local ladies take off around the GAA pitch, set dancers step it out in unorthodox footwear and even five cyclists take to the road clad in state-of-the-art racing gear – and wellingtons.

The video, entitled Killarney is Happy in Wellies, also features a number of local celebrity guest stars, including Kerry County Board chairman, Patrick O’Sullivan, chef Paddy O’Donoghue, local centenarian Jackie The Farmer and the colourful clothes salesman Enda “Fellaini” Walsh who delivers a particularly robust dance performance complete with wig and suit.

The club needs close on 2,000 participants to run or walk on the big day and would welcome support from all quarters.

The video production team included Derry Healy, Paud and John O’Donoghue, Danielle Favier, Cathy Somers and Paul Favier.
