Killarney has achieved a remarkable feat in waste reduction and the town is setting an inspiring example for other towns in Kerry.
Findings from the Clean Technology Centre at the Munster Technological University, as part of the Killarney Coffee Cup Project, reveal that Killarney has significantly less coffee cup
waste compared to other towns in the region.
This achievement highlights the power of community-driven initiatives and the potential for sustainable practices to yield tangible results.
According to the survey, a mere 3.8% of the weight of street litter in Killarney’s bins is made up of single-use coffee cups.
In contrast, Dingle (8.8%) and Kenmare (6.2%), which were also part of the survey, recorded much higher percentages and these numbers underscore the progress that Killarney has made towards becoming a town that champions sustainability and actively reduces waste.

The success of the Killarney Coffee Cup Project is not just a matter of statistics – it is a testament to the concerted efforts of the local community, businesses and environmental advocates.
By promoting reusable alternatives and encouraging residents and visitors to choose sustainable options, Killarney is taking proactive steps toward becoming a model town in the fight against single-use waste.
However, while the results are encouraging, they also indicate that there is still more work to be done. The presence of coffee cup waste in Killarney, even at a reduced level, suggests that not all businesses or consumers have embraced the shift towards sustainable practices.
The survey notes that the remaining coffee cups in the town’s litter bins primarily come from Irish and multinational chains and a few non-participating local outlets. This highlights a crucial area for further action.
The Clean Technology Centre’s ongoing research, which includes gathering feedback from locals and visitors, is an excellent step towards understanding the community’s needs and concerns.
Louise Byrne of the Killarney Coffee Cup Project said this data will be invaluable in shaping future initiatives and policies that could further reduce waste in Killarney and serve as a blueprint for other towns aiming to follow suit.
“We encourage everyone – residents, businesses and visitors alike– to get involved in this conversation,” she said.
