AN exciting basketball camp will be staged at the Killarney Community College gym during the Christmas break.
The Triple Threat Camp is being hosted by Killarney basketball coach James Weldon and it presents a great opportunity for budding young players to work with and learn from some top coaches.
The three-day camp, on December 28-30, is open to boys and girls from age six to 17 and it will be divided into two sections. The junior camp is for 6-1 year olds and it will run from 10.00am to 1.00pm on each of the three days. The senior camp is for 12-17 year olds and it will run from 2.00pm to 5.00pm each day
Tuition will be given by some of the best Irish and international coaches including James Weldon, Ger Noonan, Jordan Blount, Lorraine Scully and Orla O’Reilly who will guide participants through some challenging and very beneficial skills sessions.
Young players will learn new skills and drills and gain a huge insight into the fundamentals of basketball that will help them improve their overall game.
James Weldon is one of only 160 FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate approved basketball coaches, He is a former superleague player with St. Pauls Killarney and coached the club’s ladies team through an impressive stint in the top flight before going on to enjoy incredible success with the all-conquering UL Huskies superleague and national cup winning team.
He coached UL to 10 national titles in four seasons and was honoured with the Irish coach of the year award on three different occasions. Ger Noonan is another familiar basketball name in Kerry basketball circles following his impressive displays with the Gleneagle Lakers. He is current player/coach with the Neptune superleague team and inspired them to national cup success.
Jordan Blount is one of the most exciting young talents to emerge on the Irish basketball scene in recent years. He was a star underage player for Neptune and the Irish underage teams and is currently playing in Canarias basketball academy in Spain.
Lorraine Scully is a vastly experienced superleague player with Dublin side Killester and has also represented Ireland in the past as well as being team manager of the Ireland Under 18 ladies team.
Cork native Orla O’Reilly is currently playing professionally for Bembibre in the Liga Feminina, Spain’s top women’s basketball league. She played college basketball in the USA with Binghamton University and is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s top female players.
The Triple Threat Camp will have daily stations covering all the passing, shooting, dribbling and rebounding skills.
Places at the camp are limited and registration costs €50 each with family discounts. Each participant will receive a camp t-shirt and a Nike discount card.
