Already enthusiastically lauded by the Tidy Towns Competition adjudicators and the Irish Business Against Litter League judges, the hugely successful Killarney Coffee Cup initiative has now been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
The All-Ireland Community and Council Awards – facilitated by the Local Authorities Members’ Association with support from Fáilte Ireland – recognise and celebrate communities and local authorities working together and they highlight and celebrate the work done within local communities.
The Killarney Coffee Cup Project has been nominated in the Best Environmental category and the gala prizegiving ceremony will be held in the National Convention Centre in Dublin on Saturday, February 17.

The Killarney finalist will face stiff competition from projects in other parts of the country, including the Dublin Urban Rivers Project, the Green & Blue Limerick initiative and the Kingfisher Project in Blarney Park, Dublin.
Other category awards to be presented on the night include the best community health project, the local authority energy decarbonisation award, best green sustainability award, best community transport initiative and best mental health project.
The Killarney Coffee Cup Project, launched last year, was initiated to make the town single-use coffee cup free and it has been supported by the vast majority of local businesses.
It is estimated that the reusable takeaway system will remove over one million single-use coffee cups from the town annually, or 18.5 tonnes of waste.
It was introduced after it emerged that one of the most common forms of waste found in the Killarney National Park was single-use coffee cups and locals were concerned about the negative impacts this waste was having on the local environment.
