Killarney gets on its bike with new cycle frames

KILLARNEY is showing off its pedal power with the dual benefit of enhancing the visual image of the town and, in the process, providing a safer facility for cyclists to lock their bicycles if they want to enjoy a stroll.

New ornamental steel bicycle stands have been provided at key locations close to the town centre and, in addition to being an very attractive feature, they also solve a dilemma for those that wish to keep their pedals under lock and key.

Locations where the structures have been placed include Port Road, opposite the Old Monastery Day Care Centre and alongside the Deenagh River, as well as on Main Street, outside the courthouse and close to the traffic junction at Upper High Street. They are fastened to the ground and the names Cill Áirne and Killarney have been painstakingly  cut into the frames.

Incoming Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, said as well as being easy on the eye, the solid steel bicycle frames serve a very useful purpose for cyclists.

He said he has also been seeking the provision of high-quality covered parking bays for bicycles that would keep the bicycles dry and ready for immediate use when the owner returns and he hopes that will come to fruition.

The bicycle structures are an appropriate addition to the Killarney streetscape given that the town is home of the Ring of Kerry charity cycle which attracts thousands of people every year.
