THE transfer station in Killarney is by far the busiest recycling and waste management facility in Kerry with a six per cent hike in the quantity of waste disposed there in 2016, official figures show.
A whopping 1,528 tonnes of waste was brought to the site at Coolcaslagh with a further 671 tonnes of recycling material collected last year.
“This reflects a substantial increase in the use of the facility by the public,” a spokesperson for the Killarney Musical District Council confirmed.
The increase in demand caused some difficulties, however, as the car park – which could only accommodate three vehicles – was deemed no longer fit for purpose due to the increase in traffic visiting the site.
A new barrier system has now been installed to control traffic movements into and out of the recycling area and ensuring it provides a safe zone for pedestrians using the facilities.
An additional nine car parking spaces have been provided on the land which is owned by the council.
“It is hoped the changes will ensure the continued safety and comfort of our customers at this very busy site,” the spokesperson added.
