THE Franciscan Friary in Killarney hosted a very special ceremony this Saturday afternoon for the solemn profession of two brothers.
Br Ronan Sharpley, OFM, and Br Denis Aherne, OFM, were surrounded by their community and members of their families for the occasion but the number in attendance at the 1.00pm ceremony was strictly curtailed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Br Denis, a native of Listowel, and Br Ronan, made the first profession of their vows back in 2015.
Having completed his postulancy in Killarney, Br Denis initially received the Franciscan habit at a ceremony in the Inter-Provincial Novitiate in Burlington, Wisconsin in the US.
Br Ronan, from Athlone, who had worked in El Salvador as a civil engineer with Viatores Christi, has just completed three years of theology studies in Rome and returned to Ireland in July.
The Franciscan community in Killarney dates back over 150 years. A Belgian Franciscan, names Fr Archangelus Vendricks, agreed to bring some friars to Ireland in 1858 and after initially basing themselves in Co Wexford, they eventually set their sights on Killarney where they have played such a hug spiritual and community role for over a century and a half.
