DANCERS from Killarney are right up there with the best in the country and they are proving it this week at the Oireachtas Rince na hÉireann, the All-Ireland Irish Dancing Championships.
Competitors from over 20 countries have descended on the INEC, Killarney for the week-long event which has attracted in excess of 2,000 competitors and an incredible 7,000 spectators to the town
The local Sheehan Murphy School of Irish Dance is blazing quite a trail at the big event with some of its troupes qualifying for the world championships which will be held in Glasgow in March.
The under 15 mixed team won first place, the under 15 girls’ team were fourth and the Sheehan Murphy School was third in the three-hand reel.
The local dancers, trained by Norrie Sheehan and Aine Murphy, were thrilled with their successes and are eagerly looking forward to taking on the world – quite literally.
Dancers at the INEC range range in age from nine years to senior and they are competing in solo and team competitions.
This year, Oireachtas Rince na hÉireann is an international qualifying event, offering dancers from every region the opportunity to qualify for the world championships.
