FOR the third year in a row, Killarney Cycling Club’s under 16 team has won the overall team prize at the All-Ireland cycling championships.

Held in Co Monaghan over the weekend, the team of Stefan Caulfield-Dreier, Lorcan Daly and Patrick Galvin performed best over three stages that included a road race, a criterium circuit race and an 8km time-trial.

Stefan also won gold in the individual time-trial and Patrick was second in the road race but it was their overall consistency and teamwork that won the day.

Leading the field were Killarney’s Patrick Galvin, Lorcan Daly and Stefan Caulfield-Dreier

The club’s other four riders also did extremely well, each getting a top10 placing in their individual events. They were under 13 Callum Steadman-Murphy; under 14’s Louise Steadman Murphy and Shane Galvin and under 15 Adam Lenihan.

Three years of consecutive success at All-Ireland level results from the emphasis the club has been putting on youth development over the last few years and, of course, the hard work of the riders.

The All-Ireland success finished off a great year as, just two weekends ago, under 16 rider, Patrick Galvin, helped the Irish team take overall victory in the Errigal International Youth Tour.

Stephen Daly, who managed the Killarney at the All-Ireland finals, said that he was delighted for all the riders and the club.

“We have been working very hard with young riders over the last number of years and three consecutive All-Ireland titles is testament to that effort and the commitment of the riders. They all did very well and are very proud of every single one of them,” he said.

Along with Stephen, the other Killarney mentors who made the journey to Monaghan to support the team were Kerry Steadman, Heiko Dreier and Linda and Patrick Galvin.
