Killarney Valley AC has both women’s and men’s teams entered in the national indoor league at the national indoor arena in Abbotstown and in the Athlone indoor arena this January and optimism is high that they will acquit themselves very well.
Club spokesman, Jeremiah Griffin, said having two teams competing at the highest level reflects the super organisation within the club and the standard of top-level athletes within Killarney Valley AC.
“Domestically, within Ireland, we incorrectly designate athletics as a minor sport but athletics is a truly global sport.
“The performances at the European Championships and the performance by the Irish athletes at the Olympic Games reflects the super work done by the Athletics Association of Ireland and its 70,000 members,” he said, adding that 2025 again promises to be very exciting for all the athletes in the club.
Killarney Valley AC boasts 380 members and 25 volunteer coaches.
In 2024 club athletes won a total of 59 national medals, 148 Munster medals and county titles in cross-country and track and field.
The club also held the inaugural Streets of Killarney five-mile race, acquired a state-of-the-art electronic timing system, welcomed 100 graduates from its couch to 5k event and commenced work on its new pole-vaulting facilities.
This year’s couch to 5k initiative will commence on January 7 and it will continue until February 27 with participants then invited to take part in the Killarney House park run on Saturday, March 1.
