THERE was heartbreak for Kilcummin in the Kerry senior football championship today as they fell to a late Shannon Rangers goal and must now contest the losers’ round.
Kilcummin were actually two points to the good as the end of the game approached but the north Kerry side never gave up hope and pounced for the decisive score at the close, to win 1-11 to 0-13.
It was a really close game all through and Kilcummin had the narrowest of leads, 0-9 to 0-8 at the break.
In the other round one ties, last year’s beaten finalists Austin Stacks had a four point victory over Feale Rangers, 0-14 to 0-9 and South Kerry had too much in reserve for Kerins O’Rahillys and eventually ran out 1-14 to 1-7 victors.
Mid Kerry, inspired by Darran O’Sullivan, accounted for St Kierans on a 2-14 to 2-10 scoreline in Castleisland. On a worrying note for Eamonn Fitzmaurice, however, O’Sullivan was later helped from the field with what appeared to be a recurrence of a groin injury.
Five-in-a-row chasing Dr Crokes play Rathmore at 6.30pm this evening.
