KILLARNEY and Kerry is returning a resounding Yes vote in the referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment 35 years after it was introduced.
With all 213 boxes open, at the count centre at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Complex, tally figures indicate that the final outcome in Kerry will be 58.9% Yes to 41.1% No.
The figures – which have still to be officially clarified – show that every polling booth in the Killarney urban area had a comfortable if not emphatic Yes majority but there were still come areas around the county that has an overall No vote, including Rathmore, Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla and Currow.
The turnout in Kerry is understood to have been just under 60 per cent and it will be mid to late afternoon before Returning Officer, Padraig Burke, confirms the result.
One visibly upset No vote campaigner at the count centre, who said she was “horrified” by the result, described the outcome as “a dark and sad day” but Yes vote activists have welcomed how Kerry voted and thanked the people for doing so.
