A new initiative to get the whole country reading is being launched in the lead up to National Day of Reading on this Saturday, February 25.
People of all ages are invited to get reading – for one minute, 10 minutes, an hour, or more – and a special event will take place in Killarney Library on Saturday.
Funded by Healthy Ireland and supported by public libraries and many organisations that promote literacy and the arts, Ireland Reads is a campaign supported with a dedicated website – www.irelandreads.ie – where people can pledge to read on the day.

The website also offers book recommendations with over 800 recommendations from librarians all around the country. Users can simply enter their favourite type of book and how long they would like to read for each day and the website will offer a suitable book suggestion and work out how long it will take to complete – a real couch to 5k for books!
Each Kerry library will hold storytime sessions and crafts workshops for small children on the day and Killarney Library will host storytime on Saturday at 11am with worksheets.
Amanda Geard, author of The Midnight House, will be in Tralee Library at 2.30pm for a book chat and all are welcome.
Kerry County Librarian, Tommy O’Connor, remarked: “If you have never visited a library or have not done so for a while, take time out this Saturday to call in to any of the nine Kerry libraries”.
