Kerry has the second lowest Covid incidence rate in the country

Five new positive Covid-19 tests were notified in Kerry since midnight

THERE has been a very significant and very welcome drop in the number of coronavirus-related deaths in the county with six additional fatalities reported by the Department of Health this Monday evening.

Five of the deaths occurred in February and the other dates back to last month and it is the lowest number of daily fatalities since the start of January.

The median age of those who died was 84, the age range was from 75 to 95 years and there have now been 3,687 Covid-19 linked deaths in the Republic of Ireland.

A further 829 cases of infection were confirmed today bringing the overall total to 204,397 since the outset of the pandemic.

Five of the new cases were in Kerry but the country still has the second lowest 14-day incidence rate in the country – second only to Roscommon – with a 146.9 infection rate per 100,000 population.

217 people in Kerry tested positive for Covid-19 in the past fortnight.

Early this morning there were 1,212 patients being treated in hospitals for Covid-19 complications with 176 in intensive care. There have been 39 additional people with the virus admitted to hospital within the past 24 hours.

Of the cases notified today, 426 are female and 401 are male with 63 per cent under the age of 45. The median age of those affected is 35.

386 of the cases reported today were in Dublin, 39 in Meath, 36 in Cork, 35 in Kildare and 32 in Louth with the remaining 301 cases spread across 20 other counties, including the five in Kerry.

Up to Friday last, 230,776 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had been administered with 151,212 people receiving their first dose and 79,554 people getting their second dose.
