Kerry battered by freak summer weather

Inch beach: The public has been advised to stay away from open spaceswhen the weather is at its worst and to be aware of the timing of high tides

Several homes and business were without water or power for long periods this Tuesday as the freak summer thunderstorms continue to impact on Kerry.

Heavy and thundery showers hit Killarney this evening with localised flooding reported in a number of areas, including significant problems on Countess Road, Muckross Road and Park Road, and that is leading to a heavy backlog in traffic.

Over 1,600 homes in Killarney were also without power due to a major break in the Woodford area.

It is also understood that a house fire in the Park Road area may have been started by a lightning strike and emergency services are currently at the scene.

Killarney Municipal District Council ‘s local coordination group has met to discus the crux and an emergency number (066-7183588) has been activated to deal with any serious problems that arise.

Much of Fossa, Ballydowney and other areas had no water supply throughout the day and there was severe flooding reported in Listowel with the public advised to steer clear of the Clieveragh area.

Met Éireann issued a nationwide Orange weather alert early this afternoon with thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast and Kerry County Council’s management team met to put a contingency plan in place.

Crews have been on standby and members of the public were advised to avoid beaches and exposed open areas and to be aware of the possibility of dangerous driving conditions.

The heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to ease tonight leaving isolated showers with patches of mist and fog likely to develop overnight.
