A LOTTO ticket that had the lucky numbers for a whopping jackpot of over €9 million was left in a handbag for almost a week because the winner forgot to check it.
A family syndicate won the massive sum with a ticket bought at Daly’s SuperValu in Killarney on April 18 but it was days before the golden ticket was checked.
One of the lucky winners – who is remaining anonymous – said they heard there was a big win but they didn’t entertain the thought that it could be them until they eventually checked the ticket.
“It was such a surreal moment when you realise you have won. Without even thinking about it, I just started hopping all over the living room in delight.
“It’s so funny to think I was walking around with the winning ticket in my bag for almost a week,” one of the lucky winners said.
Although choosing to remain anonymous, it can be confirmed that a local family won the bumper €9,772,175 prize.
The two-month delay in receiving the prize – due to Covid-19 travel restrictions – worked out well for the winners as it gave them some time to come to terms with the windfall and to decide what to do with it.
“We knew it would come sooner or later so we really didn’t mind the wait,” the winner said.
The family were the first Lotto jackpot winners to avail of a new postal claims process following rigorous verification checks.
