Junior warden scheme not suitable for Fossa school

THE provision of a long-sought pedestrian crossing for Fossa National School is to form part of an overall improvement scheme between the Golden Nugget Cross and the Gap of Dunloe Cross on the N72, it has been confirmed.

Kerry County Council will submit the application for funding by the end of September and it will contain a number of options which have been identified as appropriate for the busy Killarney-Killorglin roadway immediately outside the school

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, who previously brought a deputation from the school to a council meeting to highlight their concerns, said engineering staff have told her that one of the options could be the junior warden scheme with pupils essentially managing the crossing on the road for other students.

She stressed, however, that following the deputation in 2018 and follow-on communications between management of the school and parents and staff, the junior warden scheme was not considered a suitable option.

Cllr Healy-Rae is again objecting to the junior warden scheme being considered and she said it should not be included in the submission to be sent to Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

“It would be more prudent now to make sure the application addresses the needs of the school and takes into consideration what is a red line issue for them, even if that means delaying the application by a week or so,” she said.

“We must make certain that the options included in the application are workable for the school going into the future and don’t pose additional problems down the line,” Cllr Healy-Rae told KillarneyToday.com.
