GARDAI in Killarney have praised all those involved in the organisation and stewarding of last weekend’s Rally of the Lakes and they have congratulated them for a job well done.
Despite the big influx of people for the event, Gardai said there were no major incidents and the policing operation put in place worked exceptionally well.
A number of people will appear in court in the coming weeks charged with minor public disorder offences and breaches of road traffic legislation but Gardai have confirmed that the number of incidents was way down on previous years.

Extra Gardai were drafted in for the weekend – mainly for traffic duties – and everything ran smoothly for the duration of the motorsport spectacle.
“A lot of hard work was put into it in advance and there was great co-operation between Gardai, rally organisers and all the stakeholders involved. We are delighted with the way everything worked out,” a Garda spokesman told KillarneyToday.com.
Killarney and District Motor Club has anticipated an influx of up to 60,000 people for the rally but the attendance was well short of that.
“The crowd was down all weekend probably because of the Ed Sheeran concerts in Cork which attracted a huge crowd,” the Garda spokesman said.
Donegal duo Manus Kelly and Donal Barrett, driving a power-packed Subaru Impreza, were the winners of the rally but a very notable local success was that of brother ans sister crew Rob and Tara Duggan who clinched the National Rally category in their Ford Fista Mk2.
Killarney and District Motor Club’s clerk of the course, Dermot Healy, and his organising team ensured nothing was left to chance out on the course and participating crews acknowledged that it was one of the best run rally events int he country.
