It’s a dog’s life at gala Killarney show

All creatures great and small, from petite Pomeranians to gigantic Bernese mountain dogs, took to the canine catwalk in Killarney yesterday for an all-breed championship dog show that has become a big annual attraction.

Competition was intense with tension – and barking – occasionally reaching fever pitch as proud owners put their perfectly groomed and manicured pets through their paces to be assessed by expert judges.

And it soon became abundantly clear to curious onlookers that what was sought was elegance, poise and obedience as opposed to a playful pooch rolling over and playing dead or simply offering up a paw.

They came from all over Ireland and many parts of England, Scotland and Wales for the gala event, which was held in the traditional base in the field adjacent to St Mary’s Cathedral.

Tents and camper vans lined the roads as owners and breeders frantically prepared their dogs for the judging process which commenced early in the morning and continued right up until late afternoon.

And if anyone needed any proof that it’s a dog’s life, all they had to do was pay a visit yesterday to see just how well looked after these canine companions actually are.
