‘Housing crisis seems to be getting worse by the day’

More people are being forced to remain at home with their parents indefinitely as they struggle to find independence

Kerry Sinn Féin TD, Pa Daly, has slammed the government for what he termed its utter failure on housing with no affordable homes being provided under the local authority affordable purchase scheme in the county last year.

Similarly, there was just one property delivered under the cost-rental tenant in situ scheme.

Commenting of figures released by the Department of Housing, the Kerry TD said the figures are outrageous.

Deputy Pa Daly: Many are forced into homelessness

“No wonder we are in a housing crisis that seems to be getting worse by the day.

“House prices rose by a whopping 16 per cent last year in Kerry, with this rising to 26 per cent in Tralee.

“Rents are also going through the roof. The average rent in Kerry has jumped an eye watering 64% in the last five years,” he said.

Deputy Daly said more people are being forced to remain at home with their parents indefinitely as they struggle to find independence, or they are forced to emigrate as they feel there are no real options for them here.

“Even worse still, many are forced into homelessness and emergency accommodation which is already bursting at the seams. Homelessness figures are at an all-time high. This is a damning indictment of the government’s record.
