He already has shining All-Ireland senior and junior medals adorning his mantelpiece, right up there alongside his three county senior championship honours, Hogan Cup and Corn Uí Mhuiri medals, national league and four Munster senior medals.

Room also had to be made for four All-Star awards, a prestigious player of the year accolade and more man-of-the-match awards that you’re likely to spot in any trophy shop window.

It is safe to assume, however, that the latest prize received by David Clifford means just as much to him as many of the others given that it is closer to home and closer to his heart.

The star forward has been named 2022 senior player of the year by his beloved Fossa club following his stunning scoring exploits that inspired them to the Kerry, Munster and All-Ireland Junior Championship crowns.

Being recognised by a team of national sportswriters and GAA commentators is one thing – being honoured by your clubmates, pals and neighbours is on another level altogether.

Having helped Kerry to victory over Tipperary in Fitzgerald Stadium the previous day, David was on hand at the Golden Nugget bar and restaurant in Fossa on Sunday evening to receive the covered player of the year trophy, dedicated to the memory of club stalwart Johnny Kelly, which is likely to take price of place at his home.

David wasn’t the only player in the spotlight at the gathering as the very impressive Sam Buckley was named young player of the year and he received the Donie Kissane perpetual trophy.

A special presentation was also made to Mark and Caroline Hallissey of the Golden Nugget who received a club jersey signed by the All-Ireland winning Fossa team and a framed team photograph in appreciation of their support as main club sponsors.
