Holder Damien heads up Kerry’s famous five

Defending matchplay champion Damien Fleming from the Deerpark club in Killarney

FOUR Kerry players have earned the right to join defending champion Damien Fleming, of Killarney’s Deerpark club, in the finals of the national gents’ pitch and putt matchplay championships.

The qualifying round was decided in Castleisland with those successful now heading for Larkspur Park in Cashel, Co Tipperary on the first weekend in September.

All four spots went to Tralee players as Jason O’Regan led home with a clean sweep with a score of 11 under par for 36 holes.

Both Alan Hobbart and county intermediate strokeplay champion Michael Conway followed with 10 under par as Darren Goodall claimed the final spot with a score of seven under par.

The qualifying weekend was tinged with sadness, however, as the Kerry pitch and putt community was shocked to learn of the death of Christina Cregan who is the mother of county non-portfolio officer and current county senior strokeplay holder Jason Cregan.

Next weekend will see two days of action with the under 16s kicking off the weekend on Saturday with the county matchplay championships in Tralee while, on Sunday, the national gents’ strokeplay qualifiers will take place in Newmarket with 21 spots on offer to 64 entered players for the finals in Collins, Cork in late September.
