AFTER four good news days without a single new case being reported for the county, two new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Kerry this Tuesday, bringing the total number of people infected with the virus in the county to 305.

And health chiefs have again warned that there is absolutely no room for complacency, restrictions have to remain in place and there is much more work to do to save lives.

Nationally, there were 24 additional deaths reported bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,488, with three having been denotified.

107 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed today and the total number of people now known to have been infected with the virus is 23,242.

As of midnight on Monday, a total of 258,808 coronavirus tests were carried out and over the past week alone 44,047 test were taken with 1,466 testing positive, representing in a positivity rate of 3.3 per cent.

As of midnight on Sunday, 57 per cent of cases were female, the median age of confirmed cases was 49 years and of the 3,031 cases hospitalized, 386 were admitted to intensive care.

6,906 cases are associated with healthcare workers and of those for whom transmission status is known, community transmission accounts for 61 per cent, close contact accounts for 36 per cent and travel abroad accounts for three per cent.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, remarked: “We are continuing to examine the progress of the disease and though we are still making progress, which is giving us real encouragement, we need to keep going”.

He added: “We still have 70 people in ICU and over 500 people in hospital. We have more work to do.”

Today is International Nurses’ Day and, in a message to the public, the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer with the Department of Health, Rachel Kenna, said: “The public actions over the last number of weeks have meant nurses and midwives can continue to deliver care to those who need it. Please continue to support them during this time, hold firm and stay safe.”
