A CARING Killarney nurse will journey to Uganda this summer to volunteer her services to help those less fortunate.
Angela McCarthy from Glenflesk will be part of a team of UCD volunteer physiotherapy and nutrition students that will travel to Kisiizi Hospital to spend four weeks helping and educating families of children with cerebral palsy.
Angela, 27, is currently entering her final year of a post-graduate Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics in UCD. She previously qualified and worked as a nurse for four years and still works part-time in the Rotunda Maternity Hospital Dublin, caring for premature and sick infants.
During her time in Uganda, Angela will participate in nutritional screening and will run nutritional workshops in the hospital and community settings. They hope to educate families on how to best manage this life-limiting condition and maximise their quality of life. She will also be helping in the day-to-day running of the hospital, where appropriate
This July Angela, daughter of John and Maureen McCarthy, has to raise €2,600 to participate in the project and to help raise much-needed funds. To offer some assistance, her family has organised a coffee morning in the Kerry Way Bar, Glenflesk on Saturday, April 28 from 10am to 12 noon.
The funds will go towards the cost of the development project, including any resources and equipment needed.
“I would be so grateful for any donations that people are able to give. You can all be confident that all money donated, no matter how little or large, will go directly towards the project and, I`m sure you will agree, it is a worthy cause,” Angela remarked.
Angela has set up a fundraising page on Altruism.ie where all donated funds go directly to UCDVO under her name. You can donate directly at: https://www.altruism.ie/fundraising_page/angela-mccarthy-fundraising-page-for-ucd-volunteers-overseas
