RATS are infesting houses in a Killarney residential area and it is the presence of a hedge in the area that is attracting them, Killarney Municipal District Council has been told.
Cllr Maura Healy-Rae raised the concerns of residents of Oakhill Estate and she said, on health and safety grounds, the matter must be investigated as a matter of urgency.
She asked the council to remove a hedge at the back of the estate as it is attractive the vermin who are then infesting houses.
Council officials said while there had been a dead rat found in a piece of scrubland in the area, the local authority had received no complaints about rats in houses but Cllr Healy-Rae insisted she knew of one home owner that had to call Rentokil on two occasions.
“I would ask that the hedge be removed. It’s where they’re coming from,” she stated.
The council said the hedge is also used as a sound barrier but staff from its operations department will examine the situation.
