NOT one but two golden statuettes will adorn the mantelpiece of the Healy home in Glenflesk after talented husband-and-wife, Derry and Rosie Healy, stole the show at the gala Oskars night organised as a novel fundraiser by Glenflesk and Kilcummin GAA clubs.

Dynamic Derry, an accomplished performer who first caught the public eye when he played Michael Collins in the musical drama Patrick, followed up with a power-packed performance as the Bull McCabe in a gripping version of The Field screened at a packed INEC in Killarney on Thursday night.

It earned him a richly deserved Best Actor Oskar award while The Field was also deemed the Best Film. The brilliant Kevin O’Riordan excelled as the madcap Bird O’Donnell and his hilarious performance earned him the Best Supporting Actor Award.

Making it a real family affair for the Healy clan, Rosie Healy – another star of Patrick The Musical – was chosen as Best Actress for her portrayal of Colonel Jessup in A Few Good Women.

Trish O’Callaghan from Kilcummin collected the Best Supporting Actress for her part in Forrest Gump, Donal O’Dwyer, also from Kilcummin, was deemed Best Director for his work on Michael Collins, Glenflesk’s Janet O’Donoghue was honoured for being the Most Promising Young Actor and A Few Good Men won the Best Costumes prize.

The Night at the Oskars – organised by Kevin Rowe Events and the first time an event of its kind has been held in the county – saw close on 2,000 people walk the red carpet and the audience got to enjoy the premieres of seven short films, starring over 80 local actors from the two parishes, filmed at various locations in and around Killarney.

The celebrity adjudicators on the night were Dublin screen sensation Barry Keoghan – star of The Killing of A Sacred Deer and Dunkirk – Maeve McGrath of the Kerry Film Festival and Killarney stage and screen actor Donal Courtney.
Adding to the glitz on the night were inaugural Dancing With The Stars champion, Aidan O’Mahony, and his wife, Denise, who cast their eyes over and choose the best dressed patrons on the night and the winners were the stylish Norma Leane and dapper schoolteacher Padraig Creedon.
