Taoiseach Simon Harris has promised to “keep a very active interest” in the N22 Farranfore-Lissivigeen outer bypass project.
He told Kerry Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin, that he will be discussing the matter further in Killarney in the next couple of days.
Mr Harris said technical advisors were appointed for the scheme in April 2020 and the funding has now been provided to progress the project to the route option phase.
It is expected that the route for the bypass will be determined by the end of the year.
Deputy Griffin said traffic congestion around Killarney is now a serious issue.
“During my time in politics this has proven to be one of the most frustrating issues that I have dealt with,” he said.
“Unfortunately, I am leaving at a time that this hasn’t been progressed,” he added.
