THE death has occurred in Killarney of Mrs Hannah Kelly, the mother of Ireland South MEP and the former President of the Gaelic Athletic Association Seán Kelly.

Mrs Kelly (née O’Connor), of Gortroe, Fossa and formerly of Knockataggle, Kilcummin, passed away peacefully this Thursday in the loving care of her family.

She took great pride in Seán’s success as one of the most innovative, ground-breaking and respected officials at the helm of the GAA and, prior to that 2003-2006 reign, his administrative success with the East Kerry Board and Kerry County Board.

Another landmark occasion for the Kelly family was when Seán was named Kerry Person of the Year in 2008 and when he won and successfully retained his seat in the European Parliament.

But Mrs Kelly was equally proud of the life achievements of all her children, including the late Brother Pádraig, Brian, Mary, Canon Larry who is PP in Caherciveen, Fr Seamus, MSC who has spent several years working with street children in Venezuela and retired schoolteacher Dermot.

Predeceased in April 2011 by her husband, Pádraig, and in the late 1980s by their son Br Pádraig, she is further survived by her brother Pat, grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, carers, neighbours and many friends.

In accordance with Government and HSE guidelines, and in the interest of public health, a private funeral will take place for Hannah Kelly in the Prince of Peace Church, Fossa, Killarney.

Her Requiem Mass will be live streamed on churchmedia.tv on Saturday morning at 11.00am with burial afterwards in the Old Kilcummin Cemetery.
