A HALTING site in Killarney, which is being significantly upgraded, should be nominated for consideration by the adjudicators in the annual Killarney Looking Good competition, it has been proposed.
Cllr Michael Gleeson said great progress has been made on upgrading the site at Gortroe and the competition judges should be made aware of the work that has been done.
Funding was secured for a two-bedroom extension to one of the bays and the site has been reduced from a five-bay to a four-bay facility. Enhancement works are ongoing, in consultation with the residents, to develop a green plated area within the site.
When the matter was raised at council level earlier this year, Cllr Gleeson said he was familiar with the families living at the halting site and one family was living in “totally unacceptable conditions”.
He said lessons had to be learned from the Carrickmines tragedy in Dublin, where 10 people in a halting site lost their lives, was exacerbated by the fact that their units were too close to each other.
