Guide finds Kerry beaches are just Inch perfect

Inch: Second best on the list

Two popular Kerry beaches have made the cut in the Lonely Planet list of top ten beaches in Ireland.

Inch strand, off the main Killarney to Dingle road, has come in at number two with Banna beach, near Tralee, just a place behind in third.

The publication has described the 5km-long Inch beach as the country’s most famous as it featured prominently in in at least three big movies – Ryan’s Daughter (1970), Excalibur (1981) and Far and Away (1992).

“You need to feel your feet in the sand to fully appreciate what a wondrous corner of County Kerry this Blue Flag beach really is,” the guide states.

“If surfing isn’t your thing, Inch is also a big birdwatching spot but, ultimately, it’s about a walk and a swim.,” the review said.

The guide added that Banna beach was a real favourite with locals.

“Thanks to the warming waters of the Gulf Stream, a swim here isn’t the mark of madness, especially in those glorious September days when the sea is softened by a long summer, but even if you don’t fancy getting into the water, there are some stunning views from the 10m-high dunes,” Lonely Planet said.

The number one beach in the country, according to Lonely Planet, is Keem Bau off Achill Island and others to feature are Trawmore Bay in Achill, Dog’s Bay in Galway, Trá Mór in Donegal, Ballyquin in Waterford, Streedagh Strand in Sligo, Killiney beach in Dublin and Ballymastocker in Donegal.
