A KILLARNEY guesthouse has received an impressive review on an influential international travel blog after it played host to a touring media group.
The 19th Green in Fossa, run by husband-and-wife John and Freda Sheehan, with assistance from their sons Dean, Ryan and Rocco, left the author of The Palladian Traveler hugely impressed when he stayed there as part of an Insight Vacations tour last week.
In the shadow of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and immediately adjacent to the Lackabane course, it was the delightful cuisine on offer rather than the golf that impressed the visitors.
“We’re here at the 19th Green to be schooled in the art of classic Irish cooking and not to improve our putting grips and stance,” said the reviewer.
“Jovial John’s a real cut-up in the kitchen — he could do stand-up comedy if he ever decides to hang up the apron — gets down to business straight away, entertaining this captive audience clutching cameras,” the review continued.
Chef John, who produced some of the delights from their outside catering business Freda’s Family Food, told his guests that authentic Irish cooking begins with the freshest of ingredients grown, raised and harvested locally and traced from farm-to-fork.
The reviewer, a member of the International Travel Writers’ Alliance, wrote: “From the darne of salmon, the beef in the homemade vegetable soup, the mushrooms in the béchamel, the toasted barley oats in the cinnamon crumble and the creme fraiche are all stamped: Products of Ireland. Take my word for it.”
The reviewer described the 19th Green experience as one of the treasures of Ireland.
