A GROUP calling itself Extinction Rebellion Kerry is planning to hold a public protest in Killarney in an effort to encourage a new investigation into the circumstances surrounding the wildfires that caused such destruction in Killarney National Park.

The event will be held in Killarney House and Gardens next Saturday at 2.00pm.

Although a specialist forensic unit of An Gardai Siochana, the Kerry Fire Service  and the National Parks and Wildlife Service are already investigating the cause of the blaze which occurred in April, the Extinction Rebellion Kerry members will hand in a letter to NPWS officials seeking a new probe into who might have been accountable for the damage.

“Who is accountable for this? What is being done to prevent this happening again? We want answers,” said Luke Eastwood who is group regional coordinator with environmental conservation organisation

Members of the public are being invited to the protest and leaflets outlining the concerns of the group will be distributed.

The blaze destroyed insect, animal and bird life as well as thousands of acres of vegetation.
