A BRILLIANT project by a group of enterprising students from Killarney Community College has been recognised and celebrated at the annual Kerry Garda Youth Awards.
The Young Social Innovators Be Dementia Aware won the prestigious group award and the students involved were praised for the compassion and work they showed throughout the community to raise awareness about dementia.
The awards ceremony was held in the Ballyroe Hotel in Tralee and the fifth year students involved are Caoimhe Fleming, Aoife O’Brien, Julia Olabode, Ben Cussen, Darha Puzanova and Ares Farre.
The Be Dementia Aware group was nominated by teacher Lorraine Crowley who said ‘he passion and innovation the students have shown since September 2018 is an inspiration to all young people in Kerry and beyond.
“They showed great care and support towards the families and the people who have dementia in their community and are well deserved winners of this award,” she added.
Killarney Community College principal, Stella Loughnane, said she was amazed by their commitment and passion for an idea that they came up with on their own and continue to promote on all media platforms.
“This group deserves all the plaudits they receive. Their work has raised vital awareness about a subject not everyone is educated or are comfortable speaking about,” she remarked.
