Plans for a new 139-space car park in the centre of Killarney town will be officially revealed by Kerry County Council next week.

KillarneyToday.com can confirm that the council has reached an agreement with a landowner for the development in Green Lawn which is located off New Street.

Access to the 1.3 hectare site will be via Mission Road with a link to the existing lower Beech Road car park while a new footpath is also to be provided.

The development will take place in the townlands known as Monearmore and Demesne and the car park will also feature a covered bike shelter and a solar powered parking ticket machine.

Natural landscaping areas will be implemented on the western and eastern sides of the site while existing stone boundaries will be maintained.

The plans will be formally advertised next week at which time observations from the public will be invited.

Parking has been at a premium in Killarney which leads to serious traffic congestion on a daily basis.

A total of 59 spaces will be lost in the Lewis Road car park when the planned redevelopment of the Árus Phádraig will commence.
