EASIER pedestrian access to Killarney Garda Station is to be provided to eliminate the necessity for members of the public to scale steep concrete steps to reach the building.
Cllr Michael Gleeson, who had asked for better access to be implemented, said the steps – directly opposite the government offices on New Road – presented considerable difficulty for some people, particularly the elderly or those with limited mobility.
His request had been forwarded to the Office of Public Works which is the body responsible for the upkeep of the station building.
“Fortuitously, Kerry County Council was in the process of developing the new bus/car park at Rock Road and this involved recessing and re-building the existing convent wall. This fact allowed both the OPW and the council to facilitate the development of a new access footpath from Rock Road to the Garda Station,” Cllr Gleeson explained.
He said the new walkway will be on flat ground and it will allow for much greater ease of access and egress for visitors to the station.
“I hope that the work will proceed quickly and I wish to thank Kerry County Council and the OPW for their co-operation on the project. I also acknowledge the active support given to it by the local garda superintendent and the station sergeant,” Cllr Gleeson said.
