
MANUS Kelly and Donal Barrett clinched victory in emphatic fashion at the International Rally of the Lakes in Killarney this Sunday.
Having trailed by over 15 seconds overnight, the Donegal duo stormed through the course in their Subaru Impreza WRC to cross the line 28.6 seconds ahead of overnight leaders Dub Rob Barrable and his Monaghan co-driver Damien Connolly.
“It’s a brilliant event and it is very well run – it’s a class rally,” Kelly declared at the close of the top class two-day spectacle.
Killarney’s Noel O’Sullivan partnered last year’s winner and defending Irish Tarmac champion Sam Moffet to fourth place finish in a Ford Fiesta.
Meanwhile, in the National Rally category the day belonged to brother and sister Rob and Tara Duggan from Aghadoe, Killarney who clinched the title in their power-packed Ford Escort Mk2. Father and son team Charlie and Johnny Hickey, also from Killarney, finished 10th in their Ford Escort RS.
Others to impress were Killarney and District Motor Club members Damien Fleming from Kilcummin, Barry Meade from Kanturk and Tadhg O’Sullivan and Eoin O’Leary who finished 11th overall.
The superbly run rally was a triumph for clerk of the course Dermot Healy and his Killarney and District Motor Club team and Killarney was thronged for the weekend, ensuring a massive early summer economic boost for local businesses.
