STARS, stripes and sizzling sausages will be the order of the day at the bumper Scotts Street 4th of July fundraising barbeque which promises to bring real American-style razzmatazz to the streets of Killarney.
All proceeds from the fun-filled event will go to the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus which is one of the most deserving causes in the county.
The big barbeque is being sponsored by the Henggeler-Moriarty family and hosted by the team at Scotts Hotel as part of the Killarney 4th of July celebrations when the town centre will be transformed into Downtown USA in honour of friends and family from across the Atlantic.
“We are inviting everyone to come along and enjoy the festivities. Our head chef Colin will have plenty of tasty treats to toss on the barbeque while our neighbour DJ Niall “Botty” O’Callaghan will be there to entertain the crowds,” said Scotts Hotel managing director Maurice O’Donoghue.
“The barbeque is free but we are asking that people donate whatever they can to the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus which is a very worthy cause,” he said,
The barbecue will take place between 2pm and 4pm in The Courtyard of Scotts Hotel and all are welcome to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the great outdoor cook-off.
The Henggeler-Moriarty family, generous sponsors of the event, are very well known and respected in Killarney.
Eibhlín Henggeler, formerly Moriarty, is the mother of the beautiful Dorothy Moriarty Henggeler, the 2011 Washington DC Rose, who passed away, at the age of 27, at her home in Baltimore, USA on April 3.
Dorothy and her mum, as well as her dad Dick and brother Franz, always had very close bonds with and great affection for Killarney and they holidayed “at home” every chance they got.
Dott – as she was affectionately known – was a big fan of Dr Crokes and the Kerry team and many of her closest relatives are very well known in their native Killarney. Her aunts are Anne (O’Shea), Maura (Fitzgerald), Siobhan and Cáit and her uncles are Seán, Podge, Tadhg, Bill, John and Joe.
In keeping with her wishes, Dorothy, who touched so many hearts during her all too short life, was laid to rest in Aghadoe Cemetery beside her sister, Treasa, who died as a result of meningitis, at the age of two-and-a-half, 30 years ago.
