With the whistle blown on our boys’ teams for the season, we take a look back at the year’s endeavour. Our under 12 boys made great progress throughout the year. With the county league having a grading phase, whereby you are placed in a division initially and your results dictate your next step, the lads took a little time to find their feet.
A trait of this age group seemed to be the strength of a few rural clubs with the traditional stronger clubs finding that there is a lot of talent in these areas and it will certainly make for interesting competition in the years to come.
It was towards the end of the year before our lads really started to play towards their full potential and it is our intention that they continue to progress. Playing on the smaller pitch and the subsequent move to the full size pitch at under 14 can sometimes see players flourish when given the extra room but as always the skills of the game are essential.
A case in point can be seen with our under 14s this year who made superb progress. Capturing the East Kerry League Division 1 title was the obvious highlight as well as reaching the East Kerry Division 1 Championship final. Indeed, such was the level of their performances towards the year’s end that you could argue that they were playing at a higher capacity than they were earlier in the campaign when they bowed out of the county league at the semi-final stage.
Under 16: It was a case of so near yet so far for our under 16 boys. Reaching the Division 1 final of both the East Kerry Championship and county league see us ranked right up there at the top. And while the defeats were agonising, it gives the lads a great platform to build on. It is our wish that these lads continue to represent the club to the highest possible level and we are extremely proud of all our teams’ performances.
Minors: Legion’s minors were very competitive in the county and East Kerry divisions with a number of games going against us by the tightest of margins. It is at this age that we need to continue to work the hardest as it is a vital time in a players’ development. The age group is well flagged nationally as being the one where player fall out is most prevalent.
We thank the minor team management for their year’s endeavours. As we do to all the other age groups where the mentors gave all in their time and dedication to the task. It would not be possible without their input. Many thanks to all who helped out in what was a good year.
