These were the scenes on the streets of Killarney shortly after dawn on St Patrick’s Day before the dedicated members of the municipal district council outdoor crew worked their magic.
Very poor and perhaps very blurred aim on the night before, with back-up from opportunist crows, resulted in debris being strewn all over the town and the sight that awaited bore all the hallmarks of a very lively Sunday night which was, of course, the eve of a bank holiday.
But by the time Killarney rubbed the sleep from its eyes to celebrate the national feast day, all the litter was gone, the streets were spic and span and only the very early risers – few and far between for the day that was in it – knew what had gone before.
It again highlights the magnificent job the council staff undertakes every day of the week and Killarney certainly owes each and every one of them an enormous debt of gratitude.
It also stresses the real need for tidy towns volunteers who lend their support whenever possible to help in the campaign to keep Killarney Looking Good.
It is, in many ways, a small and perhaps inevitable price to pay for success and Killarney was so busy on Sunday evening and into the early hours of Monday morning that the bins were packed to overflowing.
And, after a night on the town, it’s a little unreasonable to expect revellers to take their rubbish home with them.
It’s safe to assume that most other cities, towns and villages are just as heavily littered after a big social celebration so well done to the outdoor council crew who ensure our town is presented at its best.
The work they do can very often go under-appreciated but let this be a reminder to all that the streets don’t just clean themselves.
Behind every great town is a great team doing what needs to be done to give the place that vital edge.
It’s no wonder that Killarney wins a tidy towns gold medal for effort year after year.
