HELLO London, this is Glenflesk calling. It’s mission accomplished.
A momentous sporting event for those involved in the GAA in London in 1966 was commemorated in the UK capital 50 years later, with a function held last year, but it was only very recently in Glenflesk that the book was officially closed on the golden jubilee celebrations.
A team of Irish emigrants – including four Kerrymen – were part of the London team that entered and won the 1966 All-Ireland Junior Football Championship and two of them have now been honoured at a specially convened function in The Kerry Way in Glenflesk.
The event was a successful collaboration between the London GAA Board and Currow and Glenflesk GAA Clubs with Patsy Flynn from Currow and Noel Lucey from Glenflesk honoured for the part they played in that historic 1966 victory. Both were influential stars in the game which saw London cause a major shock when they overcame a fancies Cork side 1-6 to 0-8 in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.
Castleisland native, Tom Jameson travelled from London to link up with the local club representatives on their home patch and a great celebration ensued.
Special presentations were made to Patsy and Noel who were surrounded by family members and friends on the great occasion.
Castleisland Desmonds and Kerry senior footballer, the late Timmy O’Sullivan, was also a key figure on that 1966 team.
