Damien Fleming: Strokeplay champion

KILLARNEY’S Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club chairman, Damien Fleming, swapped his official role for that of player with significant success at the country strokeplay tournament in Newmarket at the weekend.

The talented Damien regained the senior men’s title with an impressive score of 14 under par giving him a five-shot victory.

It was a great day also for Deerpark registrar, Margaret C Looney, who won the battle with her sister-in-law, Margaret B Looney, in the ladies’’ showdown to clinch win another county title.

Meanwhile at the under 16 event in Tralee on Saturday, Deerpark’s Brian McCarthy finished as overall runner-up on 113 as two closing birdies by Tralee’s Mark O’Regan saw him just pipped for the main prize.

The National Matchplay qualifiers will take place in Killarney place on the Deerpark course from 8.30am on Sunday morning. The course will be closed to all other play until the event is completed.
