Gigantic 7kg turnip on the festive menu

The giant turnip unearthed at Ardfert Potato Farm

Here’s a real turnip for the books.

It mightn’t rival Brussel Sprouts on the menu at this time of the year but the humble turnip has certainly been making quite an impression in Kerry during the festive season.

The team at Ardfert Potato Farm unearthed quite a specimen just before the turkey went into the oven and to say it created a talking point is quite the understatement.

The huge turnip measured against the more regular crop

They dug up a gigantic 7kg turnip which was deemed perfect to be paired with a Christmas ham… or two… or three.

As big turnips go, this was quite a stunner and it was sufficient to feed a very large family – or a small army – for a week.

The average turnip weighs between 200g to 600g but an autumn or winter crop yields even better varieties as does a touch of frost before harvest.

Given that the roots, stems and leaves of a turnip are all said to be edible, this particular whopper provided quite a healthy feast – if so desired.

Turnips contain calcium and vitamin K, essential nutrients for maintaining strong and the antioxidants help reduce inflammation in the body and promote heart health.

So if you’re feeling a little under the weather after the Christmas excesses, maybe a serving or two of the humble turnip will help to get to the root of the problem.
