Gentleman Tommy always had time for a friendly chat

The passing of Tommy Cronin marks a real end of an era in Killarney

There was a real air of sadness in Killarney this Friday when word filtered through of the passing of Tommy Cronin whose family operated a thriving butcher’s business on High Street for five generations, spanning over 100 years.

It really and truly marks the end of an era as Tommy was one of the most familiar and best-known businessmen in the town and he seemed an ever-present behind the counter of his premises at 9 High Street.

A thorough gentleman, who always had time for a friendly chat with customers, Tommy always had a great interest in what was happening in the town and he was a real source of knowledge and information on developments that occurred down through the years.

His shop was always immaculately presented and he was ahead of his time in many ways when maintaining the attractive traditional façade that made is one of the most photographed shopfronts in the town.

Tommy, who lived in Ballydowney, passed away peacefully at home and in the presence of his family.

He is survived by his wife, Caith, children Denis, Ríona, Patricia, James, Anthony, Will, Noel and Caroline and their spouses Bernie Quirke, Alan Long, Vincent O’Hara, Ann O’Sullivan, Grainne O’Sullivan, Ciara Murphy, Marie Therese Fogarty and Patrick Neenan.

He is further survived by 22 grandchildren, his brother Jim Cronin, sister Breda and her husband Gerry and many other relatives, friends, neighbours and loyal customers.

Reposing at O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Killarney on Sunday evening from 3.00pm to 6.00pm will be followed by removal to St Mary’s Cathedral.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday morning at 10.30am with burial afterwards in Aghadoe Cemetery, Killarney. The Mass be live-streamed on https://www.churchservices.tv/killarneycathedral.
