Gemma’s bringing it all back home

Gemma Sugrue will host sessions in the Holy Cross Mercy

CREATIVE Ireland Kerry, in collaboration with Kerry Music Education Partnership, is rolling out a new initiative to give young people, aged between six and 18, greater access to choir and youth choral music.

It will see the development of youth choral projects guided by professional artists in the four municipal towns of Killarney, Caherciveen, Tralee and Listowel with workshops for young people commencing this month and running to December.

Gemma Sugrue, a very talented professional vocalist and vocal coach, will be developing a choral group that will meet weekly in her native Killarney.

“The aim is that our young people will grow in confidence as singers, musicians and performers through the process,” she said.

Her sessions will take place every Wednesday at Holy Cross Mercy national school in Killarney and for further information contact Gemma on 086-4137930 or email gemmasugrue@gmail.com.

In South Kerry, world class baritone Gavan Ring is extending his choral work beyond Cahieciveen and welcoming young people from across the Iveragh Peninsula. He can be contacted on 085-1477164 or email iveraghmusic@gmail.com.

Kerry School of Music director Aidan O’Carroll

In Tralee Aidan O’Carroll, director at the Kerry School of Music, has organised a taster session at the school on High Street on Culture Night, September 22, at 6.00pm.

“We want young people of all ages, boys and girls, to give singing a go. Singing is a great mood lifter and the louder the better,” said Aidan who can be contacted on 087-4103220 or email aidanocarroll6850@gmail.com/

Music examiner, teacher, conductor and performer Anna Connolly will lead a North Kerrygroup in Listowel. Anna has worked with the Cor Na nÓg Choir for RTE and is an examiner for the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She can be contacted directly at annaconnolly_2000@yahoo.com or call 08-2071412.

Kerry County Council chief executive, Moira Murrell, said the project is informed by research undertaken by Kerry Music Education Partnership and reaffirmed by direct feedback at the first Creative Ireland public meeting in March.

“Being in a position to extend the reach and experience of creativity further into communities is core to Creative Ireland’s vision,” she said.
